A maintenance-free dental handpiece, sometimes labeled Lube Free®, is designed so the turbine bearings do not require routine lubrication. However, “maintenance-free” only refers to the bearings. The push button chuck mechanism is still a precision assembly of small, moving metal parts, and it does require regular cleaning and light lubrication to maintain safe bur retention and extend the life of the mechanism.
